Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Each October, we pause to shine a light on Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global campaign dedicated to promoting early detection, prevention, and support for those affected by breast cancer.

Why It Matters

  • In the UK, around 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

  • Knowing what’s normal for your body and spotting any unusual changes early can make a real difference.

  • Research shows that up to 38% of post-menopausal breast cancer cases may be prevented through lifestyle changes like increased activity, reduced alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy weight.

What You Can Do

  • Be breast aware: Check for lumps, changes in shape, skin texture or discharge and see your GP if something isn’t right.

  • Attend screening: If you’re eligible, routine screening can help detect breast changes early when treatment is more effective.

  • Live healthier: Small changes, like exercising regularly and cutting back on alcohol, can reduce your risk.

  • Get involved: You don’t have to be directly affected to make a difference, you can join campaigns, wear pink, share information, or fundraise.

A Message from wHoo Cares: Here at wHoo Cares, we know how important it is for everyone to feel supported, whether that’s through practical help, a friendly face, or simply knowing there’s somewhere to turn. Breast cancer touches so many lives, and raising awareness means fewer people feel isolated, unsure or frightened. This month we’re encouraging you to check in with your body, with your friends, and with your community.

Remember: you’re not alone.
